What is an Expander ? An expander uses an expansion screw to slowly and gently widen the upper jaw correcting crowding, a cross bite and a narrow palate to correct function, and widen the nasal cavity to improve air flow. There will be some discomfort and in some cases braces can be avoided in the future. Speech can be affected as the expander sits in the top of the mouth on your palate.  You are given a special "Key" with your expander and it is activated at home daily as advised by your dentist


There are 2 types of Expanders that we offer at Dream Dental

• One is removable (left side of the picture) removable which can sometimes slow down treatment or get lost when removed
• Fixed, means it is glued in the mouth to the upper first molars (right side of the picture) this is sometimes ideal as it can't be removed which can sometimes lead to a quicker result.

Your dentist will advise you how long you need the expander for as this varies from patient to patient
